JAPAN’S CHANGING CONSUMER
The enigmatic Japanese consumer — long a challenge for Western marketers — is changing in ways that bode well for foreign products and services. The economic ups and downs of the past two decades, combined with an aging demographic, have individuals and businesses looking at the newer generation, which, unlike their parents, tend to seek the best deal. Simultaneously, there has been an uptick in consumer optimism and excitement, and long-time American expats are bullish on Japan for the first time in several years. Debbie Howard will address the implications of these changes, which run deep for a wide variety of products and services.
Debbie Howard has lived and worked in Japan for nearly 32 years, and founded JMRN in 1989. Debbie is a specialist in translating qualitative research into clear strategic direction for international clients, and over her career has worked with most major brands that have entered Japan. She served as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) in 2004 and 2005, Chairman in 2006 and 2007, and continues to serve as ACCJ President Emeritus. Debbie is also a Special Advisor to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation, and has taught Sophia “University’s Graduate Marketing Course as a Visiting Professor.
