Against a backdrop of rapid, dramatic changes in the security, economic, and technological environments of Northeast Asia, many new issues of relevance to the U.S.-Japan alliance relationship have arisen in recent years. The U.S.-Japan alliance is the cornerstone of the U.S. presence in Asia, bringing together the world’s largest and third largest economies. Please join us for a series of discussions of the challenges for the U.S.-Japan alliance associated with China's military modernization drive and increasing foreign policy assertiveness; North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction; the importance of sustaining and advancing trade liberalization and good governance standards for foreign lending and investment; bilateral U.S.-Japan security issues including basing, force mix, missile defense, and defense industrial development; and science and space technology cooperation.

About ISDP

The RAND International Security and Defense Policy Center (ISDP) explores the implications of political, strategic, economic, and technological challenges for global security and the specific national and regional security interests of its sponsors. It assists national security decisionmakers in developing strategies and policies to manage and adapt to such challenges and to protect interests at home and abroad, to develop new operational concepts to creatively address new challenges, and to develop forces and plans to execute their strategies. It also examines how to best advance security cooperation to improve international security and stability. Visit us online at http://www.rand.org/nsrd/ndri/centers/isdp.html.
